Frequently Asked Questions

Dealer Plates

Are there any restrictions regarding dealer plates?

Yes.  Dealer plates may not be used on “commercial cars”, which is defined by statute as “any motor vehicle that has motor power and is designed and used for carrying merchandise or freight, or that is used as a commercial tractor.”  Dealer plates should not be used on parts trucks, tow trucks and daily rental vehicles.  Dealers should also avoid using dealer plates where the use could be construed as commercial.  This would include pulling a trailer that advertises a racing team or a commercial event.

Please contact Charlie Howard of Sara Bruce regarding any legal questions you may have at (800) 686-9100.
