Dealer
Plates
Can
an employee or family member of a dealer be cited
for driving a vehicle with a dealer plate for
non-business purposes or personal use?
No.
§4503.30 of the Ohio Revised Code provides
broad authority for dealers to give permission to
third parties to use vehicles bearing dealer
plates. §4503 provides that a vehicle bearing a
dealer plate may be operated by the dealer, an
agent or employee of the dealer, a prospective
purchaser or a third party operating the vehicle
with the permission of the dealer.
Are
there any restrictions regarding dealer plates?
Yes.
Dealer plates may not be used on
“commercial cars”, which is defined by statute
as “any motor vehicle that has motor power and
is designed and used for carrying merchandise or
freight, or that is used as a commercial
tractor.” Dealer
plates should not be used on parts trucks, tow
trucks and daily rental vehicles.
Dealers should also avoid using dealer
plates where the use could be construed as
commercial. This
would include pulling a trailer that advertises a
racing team or a commercial event.
