George Edward Spry Foster, age 93, of Sandusky, Ohio, passed away Friday afternoon, Dec. 28, 2007, at his residence after a brief illness.

       

He was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Evanston , Ill. He received his education in Lansing , Mich. He worked for Chevrolet Motor Division in various locations, including Detroit , Indianapolis and Cleveland from June 28, 1935, to June 15, 1955.
     

He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy Air Corps from Oct. 1941 to Sept. 1945. He founded Foster Chevrolet in Sandusky in June 1955 and served as its president. Early in his ownership days he rapidly earned the nickname “Generous George” for his involvement in civic activities.
      

He served on many boards and participated in many local activates, including: Erie County United Way, Erie County Chamber of Commerce and its Executive Committee, Erie Regional Planning Commission, Plum Brook Country Club, Cedar Cove Association, Cedar Point Property Owners Association, American Legion Post 83, Erie County Conservation League, Perseverance Lodge 329-F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite of Toledo, National Rifle Association and sponsored the local Soap Box Derby Competition for many years.
      

George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary A. (Lacko) Foster; three sons, David A. (Sandi) Foster of Castalia, Douglas (Trudy) Foster of Sandusky, and Donald (Geri) Foster of Sandusky; six grandchildren, Dawson (Julie) Foster, Eric Foster, Jeff ( Erin ) Foster, Tami McGuire, Tracie (John) Fetter and Jennifer Foster; and 12 great grandchildren.
     

He was preceded in death by his parents, George G. and Jane (Spry) Foster.

    

Friends will be received from 3-7 p.m. Sunday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave. , Sandusky , where private family funeral services will be conducted Monday. The Rev. Thomas Fant will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery .
