Reminder: Elimination of Front License Plate Requirement Goes into Effect July 1, 2020

On April 2, 2019, the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate agreed on a final version of the State Transportation Budget (HB 62), which included an OADA-backed provision eliminating the requirement for Ohioans to display a front license plate. In addition to our customers asking for elimination of the requirement, OADA emphasized installing a front plate has become more challenging due to the increased safety technology in the front bumper, and argued that the two plate requirement has had a negative impact on both retail and wholesale commerce, especially for border area dealers and consumers since all of Ohio's neighboring states only require one plate.

As part of the negotiations, the effective date of the front plate elimination was July 1, 2020.  However, motor vehicle owners may still request two plates.

OADA appreciates the efforts of dealers, dealership employees, and metro association executives who contacted their state legislators in support of eliminating the front plate requirement. Our grassroots efforts with legislators remain the key tool we use to promote and protect dealer interests. We also want to thank our Next Gen dealers who traveled to the Statehouse to carry our message. You made a difference!
