BMV Update: Temporary Tag Changes Begin June 1st

PRINT ON DEMAND TEMP TAGS - REQUIRED FOR ALL WEB-ENABLED DEALERS

Beginning June 1, 2015, there will be a new print-on-demand process for temporary tag applications for all web-enabled dealers.  The process will likely require a change in some dealers’ internal procedures, so please review the BMV’s release, which can be found at http://autodealers.ohio.gov/links/POD-temp-tags-04-15.pdf

All web-enabled dealers will be required to use the print on demand process for temporary tag applications.  Dealers who are not registered as web-enabled dealers may continue to complete and mail in BMV Form 4349 for temporary tag registration applications. 

The BMV has issued instructions, complete with pictures, illustrating how to report temporary tags, as well as reprint temp tags, and reissue them.  A copy of the instructions is attached to this correspondence for your convenience.

TEMP TAGS VALID 45 DAYS EFFECTIVE JUNE 30, 2015

A provision included in HB 53, supported by OADA and the BMV, will make a motor vehicle temporary tag valid for a period of 45 days. This change is effective June 30, 2015.  While the initial temporary tag is valid for 45 days, any second temporary tag issued will be valid for a period of 30 days.  Temporary tags for off-highway motorcycles and APVs will remain valid for a period of 30 days.  OADA is working with  the BMV & the Legislature to extend the 45 day period to off-highway motorcycles and APVs as well.

Dealers will receive correspondence from the BMV regarding this change.  A copy of the correspondence is attached for your convenience.  Please read through this carefully. As you’ll notice, the correspondence states that the BMV has conducted an audit of each dealer’s temporary tags. A dealer is instructed to return any unused temporary tags so that free replacements can be sent.  However, the BMV notes that dealers should leave sufficient temp tag inventory for use through June 29, 2015.  Any ’30 day’ temporary tags remaining in your inventory as of June 30, 2015 can be returned for replacement by July 31, 2015.
